“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

November the 11th is Armistice Day in the UK and across the Commonwealth. It marks the day in 1918 when an agreement was signed to end the fighting of the First World War. It was signed at 11am and to mark its occasion, a national 2-minute silence is held every year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.  Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day, as it is known, is an opportunity for us to stop, remember and acknowledge the sacrifice of those who have given their lives in the service of their country since the First World War began in 1914.

It seems fitting to be able to share that Barnet Carers Centre has signed the Armed Forces Covenant this year and our pledges have been accepted by the scheme. The Armed Forces Covenant is… ‘A promise from the nation to those who serve or who have served, and their families, which says we will do all we can to ensure they are treated fairly and not disadvantaged in their day-to-day lives’.

Barnet Carers have pledged to:

  • Widen ways in which we identify carers with Armed Forces connections
  • Offer tailored support to those from the Armed Forces Community
  • Ensure staff with military connections are offered flexible, remote working and short notice leave around operational needs
  • Ensure staff across the organisation are aware of the needs of the Armed Forces Community

Are you, or someone you know a veteran who is caring or being cared for? Do get in touch with me, I would love to hear from you.

You can find a wealth of information and support about veterans, whether they are the cared for person or the carer, on our dedicated webpage here: Carers and Veterans support | Barnet Carers

“At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – we will remember them.”
