BYCAS definitions  of (A) Young Carers and (B) Siblings

(A) Definition of a young carer:

“Young carers are children who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, a mental health problem or a substance misuse problem. Young carers take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.”

(B) Definition of siblings:

“People who grow up with a brother or sister with special needs, disability, chronic illness are often referred to as ‘siblings’. Many siblings need support and information at different stages of their lives”

How do I make a referral?

Please ensure that you have received consent from the parent/guardian for the referral to be made and for data to be held by BYCAS.

Referrals can be made online and this will go directly to the Young Carers Support Team.  An automatic email will be sent to the referrer to confirm that it has been received.

Alternatively, the form can be downloaded and emailed or posted to the Young Carers Support Team with the details on the form.

What happens after a referral has been made?

The referral will be inputted onto our referral tracker (waiting list) and contact will be made with the family within 5 working days.  The Young Carer Support worker will discuss who we are and the support services we offer.  If possible, family assessments will be done on the phone.  Young Carer registration and assessment can be done either online, by post or through a home visit.  After the Young Carers assessment has been completed the support worker will contact the family to discuss the support plan and accessing services.
